USPTO:

1. Issued Patents [PATFT]  
§  It provides online full-text access for patents issued since 1976.
§  Older patents cannot be searched using their text, but can be searched by Class or number, and their full-page images can be obtained since 1790.

2. Published applications   [APPFT]
·         The Patent Office began publishing pending applications in 2001, and the text of published applications can also be searched by keywords.
·         Published Applications since 15 march 2001

3. Since the issued patents and published applications are on separate databases, they must be searched separately.

4. To view the patent images, it may be necessary to install TIFF-viewing software that can handle the particular format used by the Patent Office.

Patents issued 1976-present   vs.  Patents issued 1790-1975:

1976-present
Full-text searching available (inventor name, assignee, title, abstract, claims,             description, etc.) through the Patent Full-Text Database

Can search for patents using Quick or Advanced Search OR you can do Classification Searching

1790-1975
Can use the Quick and Advanced Search using issue dates or if patent number or current US classification is known.(Examples: patent number: 3,461,274 and classification number: 99/385)

Must use Classification Searching to find patents from 1790- 1975
