Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual
Property Rights (TRIPS)
Agreement on trade-related aspects of intellectual
property rights requires members to comply with certain minimum standards for
the protection of IPR. But members may choose to implement laws which provide
more extensive protection than is required in the agreement, so long as the
additional protection does not contravene the provisions of the agreement. The
WTO’s TRIPS agreement, negotiated in the 1986-94 Uruguay round, introduced
intellectual property rules into the multilateral trading system for the first
time.
