What is a patent attorney?

A patent attorney is an attorney who is not only admitted to practice in one or more of the states, but who is also admitted to practice specifically before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. It should be noted that one need not be an attorney to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office, which is why there are also patent agents.
