What is the best mode requirement?

In patent law, there is a requirement that a patent application enable the invention, which means that it explains how to make and use the invention. One aspect of this requirement is that if there are multiple ways of making or using the invention and the inventor prefers one of those ways, this preferred way must be disclosed in the patent application. The requirement that this preferred method be disclosed is the so-called best mode requirement.
