Can I patent a living thing?

Generally, you cannot patent a living thing. However, there are exceptions to this rule. For example, newly genetically engineered animals or plants can be patented (there are currently patents for genetically engineered mice). Similarly, while you may not be able patent a plant, you may be able to patent the process of extracting some chemical from that plant.
