Can I patent an idea?

One of the things that you cannot obtain apatentfor is an idea. For example, the PTOwill not grant a patent to you simply for your idea about a machine that can clean the house of the mess your significant other makes. But if you can fully detail, describe and implement that machine, you may be able to get a patent.
